The short version
Kioku has no server of its own. It talks to AniList and to nobody else. It collects nothing, sends nothing anywhere for analysis, and has no account system beyond the AniList account you already have.
What is stored, and where
Everything below lives only on your device:
| What | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AniList access token | App preferences | So you stay signed in |
| Cached API responses | App cache directory | So the app works offline and stays inside AniList's rate limit |
| Downloaded cover art and banners | App cache directory | Same |
| Your app settings (theme, corners, language, list layout, title language) | App preferences | So they survive a restart |
| How many days you have opened the app, how many list updates you have made, and when it last asked for a rating | App preferences | To decide when to ask for a Play Store rating, and to ask rarely |
| If you switch episode alerts on: the alerts waiting to go off — series title, episode number and air time | App preferences | To show the notification when the episode airs, including after the phone restarts |
None of it is transmitted to the developer. There is nowhere for it to go: no Kioku server exists.
The access token, your settings and any scheduled episode alerts are excluded from Android's cloud backup and device-transfer, so a restore onto a new phone does not carry your AniList credential with it. You sign in again instead.
What leaves your device
Requests to AniList (graphql.anilist.co) and its image CDN, carrying:
- your access token, so AniList knows which account is asking;
- whatever the screen needs — a search term you typed, a list entry you edited, a post you wrote.
This is the app doing what you asked it to. AniList's own handling of that data is governed by their privacy policy: https://anilist.co/terms.
What is not collected
- No analytics or telemetry of any kind.
- No crash or performance reporting.
- No advertising, and no advertising identifier.
- No third-party SDK that collects anything for Kioku or its developer. The app's
only dependencies are Flutter's own
path_provider,shared_preferences,flutter_localizations, Google Play Billing and Google Play's in-app review library. - No location, contacts, camera, microphone, files or device identifiers. The
app requests four permissions:
INTERNET;ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE(pulled in by Google Play Billing);POST_NOTIFICATIONS, which Android asks you about only if you switch episode alerts on; andRECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED, so those alerts can be put back after the phone restarts.
Donations
Kioku offers optional in-app donations. They unlock nothing — every feature is available without them.
Payment is handled entirely by Google Play. Kioku never sees your name, card, billing address or email; it receives only whether a purchase succeeded. Google's handling of the transaction is covered by their own policies.
Ratings
After you have used Kioku for a while it may show Google Play's rating card. That card belongs to Google Play, not to Kioku: a rating or review you enter there goes to Google and is published on the Play Store under Google's own policies. Kioku is not told what you wrote, what you rated, or whether you rated at all.
The counters that decide when to ask (see the table above) never leave your device.
Episode alerts
Episode alerts are off until you switch them on. When they are on, Kioku looks up the next episodes of the series on your own list — a request to AniList like any other the app makes — and schedules a notification for each with Android itself, on your device.
There is no push service and no server in between: nothing about what you watch is sent to the developer, to Google or to anyone else in order to notify you. Switching the alerts off, or signing out, cancels every one that was scheduled.
Links
If you choose, in Android's settings, to let Kioku open anilist.co links,
Android hands the address of a link you tapped to the app so it can show that
page. The address is used to open the page and is not stored or sent anywhere
other than AniList.
Children
Kioku is a client for AniList, which is not directed at children under 13. The app collects no personal data from anyone, of any age.
Deleting your data
- Sign out inside Kioku deletes the access token and the entire cache from the device.
- Uninstalling removes everything the app has stored.
- Your AniList account and its contents are unaffected by either, and are deleted through AniList itself.
Changes
Material changes to this policy will be noted by the date at the top, and the updated policy published at the same address.
Contact
Kioku is an unofficial client. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to AniList. All series data, artwork and user content belong to AniList and its contributors.
